my evening with wilco:
i remember leaving the theater when i was a kid, having just watched Rocky IV. i desperately wanted to find some smug commie, and with my 10 year old fists - beat the tar of him. i put my walkman on and while listening to the opening bars of Europe’s “The Final Countdown”, was just eying people leaving the movie to catch a glimpse of who might secretly be a russian. i was just pumped and ready to go. Let’s do this!!
my brains firing neurons brought that sense memory to mind last night after leaving the wilco show. except i didn’t want to beat anyone up & i wasn’t scanning the crowd for commies. you can see something so intense & inspiring that it’s an adrenalin rush. 6 people playing their asses off for 1.75 hours is just that.
although i sat next to a few ladies that clapped on the 1 and 3 for the entire night, i left unfazed by any drunken encounter or awkward concert exchanges. i wasn’t listening to Europe when i left, but was totally feeling the same thing….”let’s do this!”.
